Hey you!
Do you want to know all about Email?
Then keep reading!!!
I made this site for my science expo project so people could read about how email works and what it is all about.

My life basically revolves around computers. I couldn't live without them. They are helpful in many ways, but email is probably the best thing a computer can have (once you have high speed internet access.)

HISTORY

THE HISTORY OF EMAIL...

The first email was sent more than 30 years ago, in 1971.  Many professors and students at universities, as well as government researchers, started using email in the late 1970's and 1980's.  The introduction of the "world wide web" in the early 1990's led to (or at least coincided with) the explosive growth of email.  This presentation explains some of the history of email.

TECHNOLOGY

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING...

Email is a form of instant (or almost instant) communication. It really helps businesses and individuals be more efficient.  It allows people to quickly communicate with text messages, even if they are on separate continents. You can also send other things as well. These are called "attachments" to emails.  You can send pictures of the baby to proud grandparents, or send electronic, animated postcards to your friends from Hawaii, and you won't even have to pay postage!  This part of the presentation explains the technology behind email, basically "how it works" as well as some crucial definitions.

USES

USES OF EMAIL...

Both businesses and individuals use email to assist them with efficient communications.  Business uses include checking on orders from vendors, letting customers know about sales, and telling employees about meetings and policies.  Personal uses are everything from birthday greetings and dinner invitations to job applications.  In general, email is faster, less expensive, and more convenient than other methods for many many types of communications, and that is a good thing.

ABUSES

ABUSES OF EMAIL: SPAMS and SCAMS...

There are a couple of bad sides to email too.  The most annoying is tons of messages that we didn't request trying to sell us stuff.  The technical name is "Unsolicited Commercial Email" abbreviated UCE.  Most everyone, even the folks at Hormel, just call it "spam."  Some "spamming" can get so bad that it becomes a "Denial of Service" attack against the receiving domain, because the internet connection gets so clogged with incoming messages, that legitimate messages cannot pass through.  This part of the site explains spam, and includes my own spam experiment - "SPAM: How to Get it and How to Avoid it."

VIRUSES

VIRUSES, WEB BUGS, and SPYWARE...

Another bad side to email is that if you're not careful, you can get a "hostile program" delivered to you.  If you get lots of spam, you will probably get viruses and other nasty things sent to you too.  This part of the site explains about viruses, web bugs, and spyware, and gives some hints on how to avoid them - or get rid of them if you're already infected.
How I made this presentation:
  1. First I outlined what I wanted to talk about, the important topics in email.
  2. Then I asked my mom some questions, and did some online reasearch to get the correct definitions, and some exact dates and names.
  3. I then used a notebook, and wrote out the "content" for the site.
  4. I "hand drew" the icons with pencil and paper,
  5. then scanned them in, and used Photoshop's "Save for Web" option to optimize the file size.
  6. I used Netscape Communicator's "Composer," which is an easy HTML authoring program to put it all together.
  7. Then I used ftp to put the files on my JackySuch.com webserver, and
  8. moved them across our network to the dinosaur Compaq computer for the Science Expo presentation.
  9. NOTE: This presentation is live online at http://www.JackySuch.com/Email/ AND "served locally" on an ancient personal computer at the Science Expo.  Any links within this project that are starred* mean that the link goes to another website, and therefore won't be accessible from the Science Expo.
