Notes from CTD Northwestern - Summer '03
Hi. I lived in a dorm in Evanston in July 2003. I took a great math class at the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern, Honors Algebra I. After finishing the 3 week program, I have 1 semester of high school math credit with a grade of B+. I'm doing the "Bridges" program, and will be finishing the second semester of Honors Algebra I from home during the fall of 2003. ;-)
I'm in "challenge math" for 7th grade at Park Jr High School in La Grange Park, IL. (yawn)
These are the pics mom took opening day when I checked into the dorm.
Me at the desk, on the bunkbed, and with my roommate, Kaci.![]()

Opening Day. Checked into the dorm, unpacked, met my roommate and RA, went to Osco for hangers and kleenex, and ate lunch with mom at Panera Bread. Dad joined us for the parent orientation and the "meet the teacher" meetings in the afternoon. Mom and dad left at 3:00pm.
Had dinner at Allison Hall, met the students afterwards. Sent a good night email and went to bed at 10pm.

The class is going well. I won't even talk about the 1 mile walk (right after waking up and having breakfast) from the dorm to my class. Can you spell b-i-c-y-c-l-e? There are (amazingly) 13 girls and only 5 boys in the Apogee Algebra I class. Wow. Mom was impressed. Living in the dorm is cool, and the cafeteria is ok. Kaci and I get along fine. On Saturday we are all going to Watertower. It should be fun. Tonight I talked to Byron (and Mom) on the phone, finished my homework, and went to bed at 10(-ish).

We had a regular class day today. We're 1/3 done, and I'm still getting an A in the course. Yippee!! The dorm is getting kind of hot, but my fan works well. Kaci and I rearranged the bunk beds so they are not stacked anymore. (Mom thinks it's so we can talk after lights out.) We went to the lakefront to see the fireworks after dinner, and that was fun.

Mom came up today to bring me to church. We had breakfast at Dunkin' Donuts, and also went to Barnes and Noble. Mom took these pictures while she was here visiting. The first is the entry into the courtyard of the dorm, and the second is me in a very bright lobby.![]()

We're 2/3 done, and I'm still doing well. I choked on the exam on matrix multiplication, but will be retaking it. I'm getting tired of bland overcooked dorm food, but won't starve. Tomorrow I'm taking the CTD trip to Rinkside Sports Arena at Gurnee Mills. Should be great.

Kumon Math Challenge test at Loyola. Got picked up at the dorm at 9 and had breakfast at a coffeeshop near Loyola. The test was from 11am to noon. It was pretty challenging, but fun. ;-) I'll find out in September how I did, and if I made the top twenty for 6th graders. Afterwards, mom and I drove back to LaGrange so I could see my new fishtank and pick up some extra clothes. Got back to the dorm at 5pm.
Here are the new pics that mom took:![]()

Closing Day. Mom and dad met with the teacher at 8:45 for my final grade and evaluation. Had to be out of the dorm by noon. Byron, my very smart little brother, got assessed for CTD at 10 am by Lee Wichman, and now HE'S a CTD student too. Cool! We're both taking classes on Saturdays this fall. He'll be studying literature or bugs, and I'm taking Honors Philosophy.
